One day, as Kai was tending to the archway, they noticed a young person standing nearby, gazing at the rainbow-colored glass with wonder in their eyes. The person looked lost and alone, and Kai could sense that they were struggling with something.
Kai approached the person and asked if they were okay. The person looked up, startled, and then nodded silently.
“Is there something on your mind?” Kai asked gently.
The person hesitated for a moment before speaking. “I’m…I’m not sure who I am,” they said. “I feel like I don’t fit into any of the boxes that society tries to put me in. I’m not sure if I’m gay or bi or trans or…I don’t know. I just feel lost.”
Kai smiled softly. “You don’t have to fit into any boxes,” they said. “You are who you are, and that’s something to be celebrated. And you’re not alone. There are so many people like you out there, struggling to find their place in the world. But here, beyond the archway, you can be yourself. You can explore who you are without fear of judgment or prejudice.”
The person looked up at the archway, still glistening in the sunlight. “Can I…can I go through it?” they asked hesitantly.
Kai nodded, smiling. “Of course you can. This world beyond the archway is for everyone who needs it. And if you ever need a friend or someone to talk to, I’m always here.”
The person nodded, tears in their eyes, and stepped through the archway.
As they entered the world beyond, they were surrounded by a feeling of warmth and acceptance. They saw people of all genders and identities, mingling and laughing and loving. And they felt a sense of belonging that they had never experienced before.
For the first time in their life, the person felt truly seen and accepted. They knew that they still had a journey of self-discovery ahead of them, but they felt confident that they would find their place in the world.
And as they explored this magical world beyond the archway, they knew that they would always be grateful to Kai, the genderqueer nonbinary artist and teacher who had spent over 40 years creating this beacon of hope and inclusivity.
